Anyone who rides knows Shimano, even without trying: just look at the drivetrain on almost any bike out there. The Japanese brand has been making components for over a century and is today the global benchmark for road, mountain and gravel riding. In this Bike Sport Adventure guide we look back at the milestones that changed the way we ride and take stock of the most interesting products available right now.

From integrated levers to electronics

The first real breakthrough came in 1990 with the STI system (Shimano Total Integration) on the Dura-Ace 7400. The idea was simple and brilliant: shifter and brake in the same lever. From then on, riders could change gear without taking their hands off the bars, a huge advantage on climbs and in sprints.

The second leap came in 2009, when the Dura-Ace 7970 Di2 brought electronic shifting to a production groupset. Motors instead of cables, consistent precision over time, no adjustments to redo after every ride. In the following years Di2 evolved with features such as Synchro Shift, which automatically coordinates the front and rear derailleurs, all the way to today's semi-wireless and wireless architectures.

Today the Shimano catalogue covers virtually every mechanical part of a bike: derailleurs, brakes, hubs, chains, cassettes, cranksets, bottom brackets and pedals. In recent years the brand has also added a range of technical apparel and footwear that holds its own against specialist brands.

Gravel: 12-speed GRX

The rise of gravel pushed Shimano to create a dedicated family. The 12-speed GRX comes in a mechanical version (RX820) and an electronic one (RX825 Di2). The main novelty is the wider gear range, designed for riders who mix tarmac, dirt and steep climbs on the same ride.

The Di2 version uses an internal battery that powers both derailleurs, so there are no external packs to protect on rough terrain. The rear derailleur features Shadow RD+ with a clutch to keep the chain steady over vibrations, while the levers have been redesigned for a more secure grip in the drops. Satellite buttons can be added so you can shift without moving your hands from whatever position you are in.

MTB: XTR M9200 Di2, wireless has arrived

It was talked about as a rumour for years, now it is reality: the XTR M9200 Di2 is Shimano's first fully wireless mountain bike groupset, launched in spring 2025. Fast and quiet shifting, a rear derailleur with automatic impact recovery, an integrated battery and connection to the E-Tube app to customise its functions. The series is completed by new two-piston brakes for cross-country and four-piston brakes for trail and enduro.

Shimano shoes: road and off-road

Riders who choose Shimano for their bike often choose it for their feet too, and it makes sense: shoes, cleats and pedals are designed to work together.

On the road, the benchmark is the S-PHYRE RC903, the flagship model also worn by Mathieu van der Poel. Compared to the previous generation it is lighter, more comfortable and has a very stiff carbon sole that transfers every watt to the pedal. There is also the RC903W with a fit designed specifically for women. If you want an excellent race shoe at a more accessible price, look at the RC7, while the RC5 is a well-balanced choice for everyday training, with a mesh and TPU upper that wraps the foot nicely.

Off-road, the S-PHYRE XC902 is built for competitive cross-country and cyclocross. Synthetic upper with reinforcements in the power zones, a stable heel that does not slip and a configurable sole: light treads for dry races, extra spikes when the ground turns muddy. For mountain bikers without podium ambitions, the XC7 offers a durable rubber sole and reliable grip.

If you are just switching to clipless pedals, our customer service team will help you choose the right shoe, size and cleats for your level online, so you receive the right product at home on your first order.

SPD and SPD-SL pedals

In 1990, SPD pedals (Shimano Pedaling Dynamics) seemed like an oddity: a small metal cleat under the shoe that clips in and releases with a twist of the heel. Today they are the standard for mountain bike and gravel riders.

For the road, the SPD-SL family includes the Dura-Ace PD-R9100 and the Ultegra PD-R8000, with carbon bodies and steel axles for the ideal mix of lightness and stiffness. In the mountain bike world, XTR pedals provide a stable platform and precise release even in mud.

Among the accessories, the SPD CL-MT001 cleat deserves a mention. Its tapered tip slides into the pedal with less effort, it can be engaged from either the toe or the heel, and it sits higher off the ground, so it makes less noise and wears less when you walk. A small change that anyone who goes bikepacking or touring will appreciate straight away.

Dura-Ace WH-R9370 wheels

The new Dura-Ace WH-R9370 wheels were developed together with professional teams and bring several new features: carbon spokes, a 23 mm internal rim width for wider tyres, revised aerodynamic profiles and updated cup-and-cone hubs. There are three road versions, C36, C50 and C60, noticeably lighter than the previous generation. For time trial and triathlon, the range is completed by the C99 front wheel and the disc rear wheel.

13-speed Dura-Ace: what we know so far

The next Dura-Ace, most likely named R9300, was spotted racing at the 2026 Vuelta on the bikes of a WorldTour team. Shimano has not made any official announcement yet, so what follows should be taken as a preview.

The most obvious change is the move from 12 to 13 gears, with a new cassette and most likely a smaller sprocket, which could require a new freehub body. The architecture would remain semi-wireless: wireless shifters, with derailleurs connected to the central battery. The images that have surfaced also show redesigned shifters, with more compact hoods and a different button layout.

As for timing, industry sources agree on an official launch between late 2026 and early 2027, with availability for the 2027 season. The price is not yet known, but as the flagship groupset we expect a premium positioning.

If you need to build a bike now, you can confidently go for the current 12-speed Dura-Ace, proven and reliable. If you want the latest evolution, it is worth waiting for the first official tests.
